At Simply Metal, we recently redesigned our 2-tier metal under-sink shelf with these factors in mind.
1. Strengthen the Structure Where It Matters
One common problem with multi-tier storage shelves is a weak lower basket.
Instead of simply adding more metal, we redesigned the structure to improve how the load is transferred.
The upper basket was changed from a hanging structure to a drop-in installation, allowing the rails to carry the load more directly.
For the lower basket, we repositioned the rails closer to the bottom frame to provide additional structural support.
The result is a stronger and more stable shelf without unnecessarily increasing material usage.
Good structural design is not always about using more material—it is about putting the material where it matters.
2. Optimize Packaging for E-Commerce
For Amazon FBA products, packaging size can be just as important as the product itself.
A large package can increase volumetric weight, shipping costs, warehouse space, and fulfillment expenses.
We therefore optimized the packaging of our under-sink shelf to approximately:
410 × 280 × 150 mm
The package has a volumetric weight of approximately 3.5 kg, while the actual product weight is approximately 3.3 kg.
The goal is simple: maintain the same exterior product dimensions and material quality while making the product more efficient to pack and ship.
For e-commerce brands, this type of flat-pack design can create more room for competitive pricing and healthier product margins.
3. Design for Manufacturing and Customer Experience
We also redesigned the handle using partial wooden grips instead of a fully welded metal handle.
This maintains a more premium appearance while reducing unnecessary welded joints and manufacturing steps.
At the same time, the design supports flat-pack packaging and keeps assembly relatively simple for the end customer.
This is where product development becomes more than just designing an attractive product.
A successful e-commerce storage product needs to balance:
- Structural strength
- Manufacturing efficiency
- Packaging size
- Shipping cost
- Assembly experience
- Product appearance
Optimizing these factors together can make a significant difference to the final product.
