Tested Storage from Factory Floor to End Usage

A lot is riding on your shelving.

  • The products themselves,
  • the efficiency and adaptability of your warehouse,
  • last but not least the safety of your crew and customers.

It’s difficult as a warehouse operator or distributor to ensure that every shelf will arrive at it's final destination safely, intact and flawless. It starts with engineering the raw materials, continues with testing the prototype, and finally quality assurance of the final product.

quality assurance

Testing involves making sure that loads, tipping, slippage, corrosion or rust won’t effect the performance of the shelf; and the shelves stay looking and performing like new.

Alot of effort goes into the design of a shelf, it’s look, capacity and how it will fit into your warehouse workflow, now and into the future. Testing makes sure that it stays that way.

There are 4 main areas we test at Simply Metals.

  1. How much load and stress a shelf can handle.
  2. Its adaptability to different environments.
  3. Stability and impact resistance.
  4. Certainty that packaging and shelving will arrive intact and complete through the rigors of shipping.

LOAD

Starting with design; we engineer the shelves according to plans using well established calculations and specialized software to calculate strength based on wire thickness, grid shape and fittings.

Then Physical tests start.  To make sure that both a 95 kilo gift package or a 145 kilo machine part will be stable on the shelf at all times.

Testing the level is at 180 degrees before load.We test shelves without any weight, then under all weight ranges and overloading conditions.

After manufacturing, the racks undergo lab tests.

  1. Weight is incrementally increased until the shelf bends and deformation occurs.
  2. The critical weight at this point defines the system's safety limit.
  3. We leave a comfortable margin of safety as well, with the understanding that real world usage might need extra weight protection.

In the images below. We tested shelving systems for 1) standard reference and 2) then again after weight tested.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS

environment testingOur engineering team commented on testing that, "often warehouses are subject to environmental conditions such as damp, hot, frozen and long term exposure to any of the above. We start corrosion resistance testing with salt spray tests, where racks are exposed to sodium chloride solutions and mimicking harsh temperature environments. Success is gauged by minimal rust development over specified time intervals, with ideal standards maintaining rust below 2% of the surface area."

STABILITY TESTING

To prevent tipping, racks undergo stability assessments such as tilt tests. These measure stability under varying loads. For additional stability we use of triangular foot support to further enhance balance by lowering the center of gravity.

IMPACT RESISTENCE

Solder Point TestingShelves' ability to withstand daily impacts is tested through methods like vibration and drop testing as part of transportation simulations (ISTA standards). This ensures racks remain intact through various handling and shipping conditions. Here in this image, we are checking and troubleshooting solder points.

We see great results in the world of organization and storage because of testing.

Testing is vital in every area of business, food, in software, and in rocket ships.

When a test fails, we improve the pieces to create a better product.

When a test passes, there's a trust built knowing that the end user, the warehouse or factory will be safe and the end user will be more then satisfied!
